Christening

Baptism is associated with Christianity. In a Baptism the baby's name is used and mentioned, however it is the rite of claiming the child for Christ and His Churches that is celebrated. Baptism regardless of denomination, uses water as a purifying agent "in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit".

Even though the words baptism and Christening are used interchangeably, there is a subtle difference.  Christening refers to the naming ceremony. Albeit similar to baptism  it may or may not involve a specific Christian denomination.  Water is used as purifying agent.

Naming

A naming ceremony is an event at which an infant, a youth, or an adult is given a name or names. The timing can vary from mere days after birth to several months or many years afterwards.  Usually in adult ceremonies a new name is chosen. Naming ceremonies are mostly cultural and may or may not be religious.

Earth ceremonies, may be performed at birth and  in adulthood.  As soon as possible after birth, the child is introduced to Earth, the elements  and the Universe; the infant is given a name and blessings are invoked by all present.  As an adult, the individual creates a special bond  with a chosen circle and chooses a “spiritual” name which is kept secret outside the circle.
